This scanner uses LEDs as a light source and so has zero warm-up time. The paper feeding system is very quickly and and handles exclusive sheets and passe corners with no grief. The scanner itself beats the HP 5550C I've been using.
Epson's scanner interface is not to my taste but has presets for office and graphic professional scanning needs. What keeps it from getting highest marks is the abysmal customer service.
I couldn't score the twain driver to work under Windows Vista. The WIA driver did work, but doesn't abet acquisition from the sheet feeder (which defeats the whole purpose of buying this scanner) . Lack of sheet feeder relieve is a crippling blow to the usability of Paperport (which I have stale for years) . Epson should not be bundling software that their acquire product does not attend.
I spent hours on the phone with three levels of Epson's technical attend to no avail. They tried to pawn me off on Nuance to bag Paperport back (Nuance's policy is that software bundled with hardware is supported by the manufacturer of the hardware!)
One of the technicians I spoke to did not even know that twain and WIA were different drivers. How can they possibly address my quandary when they have such unpleasant background in the product?
The acknowledge of course, is that Epson's benefit is provided by a call center in India or some such situation and the help people are reading canned responses off a computer conceal.
The level two technicians knew nothing more that the level one technicians. After a lengthy conversation with a level three technician I was promised a resolution and a return phone call, which as you might guess, never happened.
In the waste, I was left to my absorb devices and discovered a workaround. Scan using the Epson interface (which does befriend the document feeder) and region its destination directory to the main Paperport directory.
Then initiate Paperport and manage your documents from there. Not as salubrious as scanning directly from within Paperport, but it gets the job done.
I opened it, inserted the CD into my Mac Quicksilver G4 Dual 1GHz, spent the next 6 minutes installing astonishing amounts of software (been a while since I owned an Epson, I guess I forgot how considerable there is, though I absorb my HP stuff is bloated too) and removing fantastic amounts of green immobilizing tape. It's light, as I expected. Connection was a cinch, and the software recognized immediately.
In the OFFICE MODE, it took one document, a stack of 12 of various types (B&W & Color text, represent, and text with pictures), and scanning was very quick - I didn't measure it but less than 8-seconds per sheet. The scans themselves looked perfect. I tried scanning photographs, and as long as they were the same size and thickness, no quandary. It "ate" a stack of various sized photos all at once (no hurt, honest couldn't catch one-at-a-time)
In the HOME MODE, I build various collections of photos on the flat bed and scanned them. Again, very quickly... 5-seconds or so. I did rush into a glitch, but it was my error. I attempted to scan three extinct photos and legal their Color & Assist Lighting. The scan froze every try. I then remembered, ALWAYS REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS AFTER INSTALLING Unusual SOFTWARE!!! Once that was complete, scans rapidly and correction is favorable.
I will now launch scanning all of our photos...
This is the best flatbed scanner I've faded...
This is an gracious scanner that has performed very well for me since I've had it. The best feature for me is definitely the Automatic Document Feeder. It's really nice to be able to scan multi-page documents in one fell swoop, instead of scanning them one page at a time like I've been doing with my Canon MFP. The most pages I've scanned at one time so far is 33, and the ADF worked like a charm. (Note: The ADF is meant for text documents only; if you're thinking you can scan stacks of photos with this scanner, you can't.)
I have a Mac, and installation and setup of this scanner was a snap. One reviewer mentioned not being able to expend this scanner with another MFP twisted up to his computer. I didn't have any compatibility problems with my Canon MFP, but that's probably because it's bent up wirelessly.
The Epson WorkForce GT-1500 really does require no warmup, which is big. The interface is a miniature clunky, but it's not a deal breaker. Overall, the image quality of both text and photo scans is honorable.
This is definitely an obedient scanner in a relatively puny package. The obtain quality seems high and the Epson name is synonomous with quality. Nice that the USB cable is included, too (not everyone does that these days) . A couple of features I wish this scanner did have: The ability to scan slides/transparencies would've been nice. Also, scanning both sides of a document in one pass is something this scanner can't do. But you can't have everything.
A more user-friendly, streamlined interface would've been nice, too. But, like I said before, it's not a deal-breaker. This is a solid, four-star product that would be a welcome addition to any home or office.
